Getting to Know Dr. Olga Hugelmeyer: A Champion for Education in Elizabeth

Dr. Olga Hugelmeyer, recently named honoree for the Nineteenth Annual Elizabeth's Promise Awards, is a passionate advocate for education and a proud product of the Elizabeth School District. With nearly 27 years of experience in various educational roles, she has dedicated her career to ensuring that every child in Elizabeth has the opportunity to succeed.

Roots in Elizabeth

Dr. Hugelmeyer’s connection to Elizabeth runs deep. Growing up in the city and graduating from Elizabeth High School, she understood early on that “education was the great equalizer.” Her mother, a dedicated teacher for over 20 years, served as her first role model, illustrating the transformative power of education.

“I am just one of many stories of what can possibly happen in education,” Dr. Hugelmeyer reflects.

A Career Committed to Excellence

Her journey in education has included roles such as classroom teacher, Supervisor of Grants, Supervisor of Early Childhood Education, and Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning. Each position has equipped her with the skills necessary to lead as Superintendent of Elizabeth Public Schools.

“I owe a debt of gratitude to our school board who offered me the opportunity to serve as Superintendent,” she says. Under her leadership, the board has prioritized student achievement and quality instruction, focusing on policies that improve teaching and learning.

A Vision for the Future

Dr. Hugelmeyer believes in the power of collaboration and shared values among the board, educators, and the community. She envisions a culture of “collaboration, conversations, and reflection” that will help define the possibilities for student learning.

“The next chapter of the Elizabeth Public Schools will be written together,” she emphasizes. “We will strive to ensure that the next generation of Elizabeth leaders in education and government come from the Elizabeth Public Schools.”

Her commitment to excellence is unwavering, and she is determined to foster an environment where every child can achieve their fullest potential. “Together, we will work to ensure that every child achieves excellence,” she concludes.
